Ventura County – December 15, 2024, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm, at The Museum of Ventura County, 100 E. Main Street, Ventura — The Museum of Ventura County invites the community to attend its Winter Solstice Storytelling Festival, a free event celebrating Indigenous culture, traditions, and community.
The festival opens with performances by Hummingbird Women’s Drum and Chumash Singing Sisters. From 1:00 to 2:30 pm, the program features storytelling from Chumash Elder Dennis Garcia, Kat High of the Hupa tribe, and Alan Salazar, a Fernandeño Tataviam and Ventureño Chumash Elder.
Attendees can participate in hands-on activities, including rock painting and cordage making led by Julia Fireflower, a Tataviam tribal member, who will share insights on native plants and their ceremonial use. Food will be available for purchase from Island Smoke n Grill, Guamanian BBQ.
The event concludes with a public prayer circle focusing on forgiveness, community, and gratitude. The Winter Solstice Storytelling Festival offers an opportunity for all ages to connect with Indigenous cultures and traditions.
The Museum of Ventura County in Downtown Ventura will be closed Thursday, January 1 and will be open from 11am to 5pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Agriculture Museum will be closed throughout January while we complete interior updates.
