Welcome to “Winter,” our upcoming exhibition of the George Stuart Historical Figures®. Delving into the enchanting world of winter, the exhibition explores the myriad ways in which people have sought to make the most of this season. Winter is the time of year when the days are shortest, and the nights are long and cold. In response to the challenges of winter, people across the globe have crafted annual traditions to create their own warmth and find connection.
The journey begins with Norse mythology in Scandinavia, where winter’s trials are explained through rich folklore. In Russia, the Winter Palace stands as a symbol of endurance, while Valley Forge reflects the resilience of Washington’s army through a brutal winter. Victorian England introduces holiday customs we still enjoy today, and the Chumash celebrate the solstice as a turning point toward light. The exhibit concludes with the Qing Dynasty’s Lunar New Year in China, where the season’s end brings vibrant celebrations of spring’s arrival.
