Las Posadas at the Ag Museum

The Museum of Ventura County to host an evening celebration of Las Posadas at the Ag Museum, open to the public for free.

The Museum of Ventura County invites weary holiday travelers to join our family at the Ag Museum in Santa Paula on Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a Las Posadas celebration. Visitors will experience a performance of “The Apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe” by the Inlakech Group, followed by the traditional Las Posadas celebrations. Festivities also include music by local acoustic artists Mr. G and Xavier Montes, a holiday piñata game for children, and nourishing Mexican sweet bread and Champurrado!

Las Posadas is a holiday tradition celebrated at Christmas time. Brought to the Americas by the Spanish, Posadas (Spanish for accommodations or inn) is celebrated in Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and the United States. The traditional song “asking for Posada” refers to the journey of Mary and Joseph traveling from place to place, asking for lodging.

Today, Posadas is typically celebrated with song, placing one group of singers, or “Inn-Keepers”, within a residence while a second group of singers, or “pilgrims”, stand outside requesting lodging at the inn through song. The “In-Keepers” respond by singing that there is no place at the inn. The “pilgrims” travel from home to home until they arrive at their final destination where the “In-Keepers” invites them in to take shelter for the night.

Admission is free and open to the public. The Ag Museum is located at 926 Railroad Avenue, Santa Paula. For more information, please contact Elena Waller at the Agriculture Museum (805) 525-3100 ext. 101 or ewaller@venturamuseum.org
