Focus on the Masters: Peggy Pownall

Peggy Pownall is a mixed media painter and Artist-in-Residence at Studio Channel Islands since 2008. She received her B.A. from Pepperdine University and has undertaken further studies at Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy, an experience that has had an extraordinary impact on her work. Pownall’s work combines a bright color palette with unconventional objects such as old maps, journals, sewing patterns, blueprints, photos, notes and books. The tactile pieces are woven together to create a visual expression of themes including identity, longing, personal mythology and iconic memories. Her use of color, repetition and pattern create an experience for the viewer that is both nostalgic and transformative. The tailoring of these two-dimensional pieces through the process of stitching symbolically traces broken pieces together to suggest life’s pathways. They represent the emotional surfaces on which our recollections are built. Peggy is a member of the Los Angeles Art Association and has exhibited her work across the region.
