A Conversation with Hilary Brace

Hilary Brace spent most of her childhood in the Pacific Northwest, which nurtured her deep connection to nature. Brace’s images of expansive land, sea and cloudscapes are elusive and mysterious; locations that reside only in the mind of the artist. Whether working directly in charcoal on Mylar or creating a collage study for larger drawings, her compositions begin without a preconceived idea and unfold intuitively, through exploration. Finally, the image is brought into focus with exacting technique. Her awe-inspiring, light-filled drawings and Jacquard woven tapestries emulate dramatic, atmospheric events in nature while also addressing its fragility and fluidity.  Hilary Brace received her MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and her BFA in painting from Western Washington State University. She is the recipient of numerous national and regional awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a California Arts Council Fellowship.
