In 1983, fifteen years after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., legislation passed declaring a federal Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Since 1986, the first year the federal holiday was celebrated, Ventura County has celebrated the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Ventura County marks its 35th year planning the annual MLK Day event that brings awareness to the community regarding King’s legacy and acknowledges achievements of community members. The 2021 observance and celebration will look different this year, as it will be going virtual.
