Free First Sunday at the Ag: Restoring the World’s Largest Urban National Park

FREE ADMISSION TO THE MUSEUM FROM 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join us for Free First Sunday at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula on Sunday, March 1, 2020 from 12—2PM. From 12—2PM, visitors can enjoy interactive, hands-on activities in the Museum’s garden. From 1—2PM, Joey Algiers, the Restoration Ecologist for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, will give a presentation Fire, Weeds, and Sprawl: Restoring the World’s Largest Urban National Park. Joey will share his research, the restoration efforts of the park, and how the work they’ve performed over the past decade has helped preserve and protect natural resources in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The plant communities of the Santa Monica Mountains endure a number of challenges, including wildland fire and invasive species. Joey Algiers works with the park’s native plant nursery where native species are grown for restoration, education, research and conservation. For years, Joey has been managing, training and educating biological technicians, student interns, partners and the public in restoration ecology practice and theory.

Arrive early to explore the Agriculture Museum and experience the latest exhibits Throwing Shade and Patterns on the Land. As always, admission is free on the first Sunday of every month at both the Museum of Ventura County and the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. Gather the entire family and join us at the Museum!

Schedule:

1—2PM: Joey Algiers Presentation and Q&A

12—2PM: Interactive, hand-on garden and plant-related activities for kids and families.

Free First Sunday is made possible by the generous support of Mimi Allin.
