Author John Gherini on his new book, Santa Cruz Island: An Illustrated History

Join us for the fascinating history and magnificent imagery of Santa Cruz Island as presented by Santa Barbara native, John Gherini, author of Santa Cruz Island: An Illustrated History, as he shares highlights from his comprehensive two-volume book, including a selection of the 600 images of life on the island, some of which have never been published before. A descendant of French émigré Justinian Caire, who owned and occupied Santa Cruz island for more than 50 years, Gherini recounts the geologic origins of the island and traces the cultural history from the native inhabitants, over 13,000 years ago, to the establishment of the Channel Islands National Park in 1980 and its current efforts to preserve and protect the island.

For Gherini, who was born and raised in Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz Island has been a large part of his life, as it was for his father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Through access to family archives, Gherini’s unique account includes first-hand stories from his personal experiences traveling to the island on various boats, including the Hodge when it sank in 1976, and spending time, particularly during the summers, building and repairing fences, herding sheep, sacking wool and doing other ranch work on the island.

There will be books for sale and signing by the author.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Gherini is a practicing attorney in Santa Barbara, who comes from a long line of attorneys. He previously authored Santa Cruz Island: A History of Conflict and Diversity. He has also written articles and lectured about Santa Cruz Island’s history.
