Structured Field Trips for 3rd and 4th grades

We offer standards based, active learning field trips for 3rd and 4th grade students. These visits are lead by enthusiastic Museum Docents who will work with your students in small groups. Field Trips start at 9:30 am, Tuesday-Friday.

Program Cost

• FREE to Title I schools in Ventura County
• $5 per student for all other schools.
• Chaperones are free

Limited Bus Grants Available

Connected Spirits: The Chumash and Their World

60 minutes or 90 minutes
Maximum 40 students
$1 per student

This tour is dedicated to the Chumash people native to Southern California, the tour will explore the traditional Chumash culture and come alive as the docents lead students in games, songs, storytelling, art, and the exploration of artifacts they made and used in their daily life.

Early California: A Changing State
Covering Chumash, Mission, and Rancho Periods

60 minutes or 90 minutes
Maximum 40 students
$1 per student

We will engage your students through artifacts and activities to discover themes like: daily life at the Mission, interactions of peoples, and practice some ranching skills, essential for life in early California. Students will explore music and art, including a group art project of stenciling. This visit does not include a tour of the Mission, but can be combined with it.

General Interest Student Visits

Guided Visits

Groups of 15 or smaller will be guided by a Docent through all the current exhibits at the Museum. Groups of 16-65 will be greeted by docents stationed in the Museum galleries to answer questions and interpret the exhibits. Groups larger than 65 are difficult to accommodate in the Museum’s galleries.

Guided visits need to be scheduled at least 30 days in advance.

Self-Guided Student Visits

You may choose to bring your group on a self-guided visit. All Museum exhibits have labels and interpretive text that will allow you to work with your students as you tour the exhibits.

We encourage you to schedule your self-guided visit in advance so we can tell you if other groups are scheduled on that day.

Rates vary for scheduled or non-scheduled visits.

• Non-Scheduled Visits: Students $1; Adult chaperone $4

 Adult Group Visits

A Museum docent will lead your group on a guided visit of the Museum including the new plaza and mosaic installation, the current changing exhibits, the current exhibit of the George Stuart Historical Figures, and the permanent exhibit about the Chumash. Plan to spend about an hour for your visit. Many groups have lunch downtown either before or after their visit.

Please call at least 30 days in advance to schedule your visit.
