Writing family history on paper is maybe the simplest or most direct way to get the stories into a format that can be shared and passed down. Writing has been around for 5000 years for a reason – it’s a great way to save and communicate information. But with today’s technology, there are lots of other options for recording your family story.
Ways to Capture Your Story:
- Paper and Pen: This is the lowest tech option. And a chance to practice your penmanship! Writing your story down with paper and pen will mean that it will last a long time, if properly cared for and stored. You can also use a word processing program and print the story out.
- Write a Blog: You can share multiple stories by creating a family history blog. Your other family members can help too, by sharing their stories. The Museum of Ventura County’s Blog is posted using WordPress, which is an easy to use free platform for hosting blogs. - Make a Video: This family used a video editing software to create a fun short family story video. Many computers come with some kind of video editing capabilities and even smart phones can be used to create videos with captions and soundtracks. - Make a Podcast or Oral History: Did you record your oral history with family members? You can use the audio you captured to post an oral history to SoundCloud or another online platform.
