September 3, 2019
Join us on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 5 p.m.—7 p.m. at the Agriculture Museum for the opening reception of Compton Cowboys. Admission is free for Museum members, $5 for nonmembers. This opening reception gives visitors the opportunity to meet the Compton Cowboys and photographer Courtney Ellzey!
Featuring photographs by Courtney Ellzey, this inspiring photography exhibit documents the work and mentorship of modern-day cowboys working with at-risk youth.
Founded by Mayisha Akbar in the 1980s as an after-school program in her backyard, the Compton Junior Posse Youth Equestrian Program worked to train young African American youth in the tradition of horseback riding and handling to keep them engaged and out of gangs. Randall ‘Randy’ Hooke, one of the founding members of the Compton Cowboys, has continued the dedicated work of Mayisha Akbar by serving as the Executive Director and continuing the program that continues to change lives today.
