All this gathering, identifying, and researching has probably left you with a lot of information.
It can be overwhelming to decide what stories to tell. You can tell your story by writing it down or creating a video or any other interesting combination of storytelling techniques available in this digital world of ours. We’ll give you some ideas and direct you to places to get instructions and more information.
- Tell the stories that inspire you! If you’ve interviewed family, looked at old photos, and done some research, you have probably come across stories that affect you emotionally, that inspire you, make you laugh, make you cry, or wow you in some way. Focus on those stories.
- Don’t try to tackle everything at once! Start a list and use it to narrow down those inspiring stories.
- Share with your family! What do they want to hear? What stories wow them? Surprise them?
- Just make a start! The writer Nora Ephron said, “The hardest thing about writing is writing.” It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be something you publish, just making a start is a useful and fun thing to do when it comes to family history.
