SUMMARY:Ivor Davis: Up Close and Personal with Dianne Lake
DESCRIPTION:“At age 14\, I became one of Charles Manson’s Girls. At 17 I helped put him in prison. This is my story.” – Dianne Lake \nDianne Lake was a beautiful and innocent wide eyed seventh grade student – whose hippie parents abandoned their traditional suburban lifestyle to join The Wavy Gravy’s Hog Farm Commune in Tujunga\, California. Along the way her parents met a man named Charles Manson. They were so impressed by him that\, as unbelievable as it sounds\, they turned their young daughter over to Manson. Dianne was just 14. What happened next is a personal odyssey that is hard to believe. She travelled with Manson’s ragtag band of runaways and social misfits until they settled at the notorious Spahn Movie Ranch in Chatsworth\, California. She became chattel\, a slave to Manson’s sexual whims and part of his depraved world of mind-blowing drugs which culminated in a series of horrendous\, high profile Los Angeles murders in the summer of 1969. While never involved with any murders\, Dianne was arrested and her life was almost destroyed. Nowruz translates to “new day” and is celebrated on the Spring equinox by millions of people across the globe as a season of rebirth and good luck. One popular feature of Nowruz is the haft-seen\, a table decorated with seven items that begin with the letter “seen” in Farsi and other things of significance. Come see our beautiful haft-seen and make your own things to take home or add to the community table\, like tissue paper hyacinths\, painted eggs\, and egg-carton goldfish. Dance to the upbeat and festive Iranian music and listen to poems commemorating the start of spring. Arte Para la Gente explores artist Margaret Garcia’s vast body of work that captures and encapsulates culture\, family\, and urban life. Over the past four decades\, Margaret Garcia has been a leader in the L.A. Chicano Art Movement\, championing women\, community\, and those individuals who are marginalized by society. As a teacher and mentor\, Margaret has inspired and encouraged artists to challenge their talents. Her students are encouraged to reach into their souls and create art that is authentic to self\, and reflects their passion for the subjects they are painting. Many of those artists have emerged and found their unique voices in their artwork. Tai chi is often called “moving meditation\,” but those who practice it consistently often refer to it as “moving medication.” Tai chi is a great mindful exercise. Tai chi is a traditional Chinese martial art that has been practiced over centuries for self-development. This practice connects the mind\, the spirit and your body. Tai chi is comprised of a sequence of slow movements that gracefully flow from one to another. We will also practice and discuss stationary meditation techniques. Meditation has many definitions and meanings. In the West\, it often refers to thinking something over or reflection. For Buddhists\, meditation is a spiritual discipline that utilizes the power of attention to help us along the path of awakening. \nDirector\, Ventura Buddhist Study Center Tripitakavedi (Bachelor of Buddhist Textual studies)\, B.A.(Sri Lanka)\, M.A.(Hawaii). \nVenerable Tapovanaye Sutadhara entered the order of Buddhist Monks as a novice in 1966\, at Tapovanaya Buddhist Monastery\, Mulleriyawa-New Town\, Sri Lanka\, under the tutelage of Late-Venerable Kudawelle Vangeesa Maha Thero\, a renowned Meditation Master in Insight Meditation and Venerable Dodampahala Chandrasiri Maha Thero\, Patriarch\, Sri Kalyanivansa Chapter of Amarapura Sect\, Sri Lanka. \nHe was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Linguistics\, University of Kelaniya\, \nSri Lanka. During his career as an academic he held following administrative positions: \n(1) Head\, Department of Linguistics\, (2) Coordinator\, M.A. Degree Program (by Course work)\, (3) Head\, English Language Teaching Unit\, and (4) Senior Student Counselor.

Smith Pavilion at the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3—5PM for the opening reception of The Weed Project: Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden. This new exhibit by the comical and brave Charlene Spiller features thirteen botanical paintings with an ecological message. There will be refreshments and a no-host bar. Visitors will also be able to explore the new and refreshed Children’s Garden. Admission is free with registration. \nIn the macro-style paintings of The Weed Project\, Charlene Spiller draws a plumb line between art and science. She creates a new category of “bloom”\, challenging the viewer’s expectation of what constitutes beauty. All the while\, pollinating their mind with provocative thoughts about our health\, the health of our planet\, and the bottom-line of a multibillion-dollar corporation – with a multibillion-dollar legal-relief reserve – and places it all under our microscope. Deputy Director\, Denise Sindelar states\, “Ms. Spiller’s paintings highlight the beauty that exists in our fragile\, and often forgotten natural world”. \nThroughout the recent pandemic\, and our governor’s Stay-Well-At-Home Order\, Spiller has transferred to canvas a destructive environmental discovery\, healing perspectives\, and reasons to continue on\, with vigilance – literally healing herself out of hospice care and advancing steadily toward wellness. Spiller says\, “Herbicides are a dangerous game. Roundup\, which came into being in the 1970s – first used as a chemical cleaner for pipes – is now sprayed on our food crops\, almost un-checked. The Weed Project is one of providing awareness.” \nOriginally from San Francisco\, Ms. Spiller studied at the California College of the Arts\, Oakland\, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She has lived in Southern California for 25-years\, previously in the Palm Desert\, and now\, in the Hollywood Beach-area of Oxnard\, where the beach meets the fields (or the ocean meets the glyphosate). \nThe Weeds Project: “Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden” will surprise Museum visitors with its vivid lines\, vibrant palette\, pollinating parts aplenty\, and facts that just may save our lives.
