SUMMARY:Going Wild Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:For novelist Melina Sempill Watts and artist Jeff Sojka\, falling in love with a landscape means interconnecting the lives of the plants and animals that make it alive.  Watts’ first novel Tree is an exploration of 229 years in the life of a California live oak from the point of view of … the tree.  Sojka dove into the book and painted his vision of the tree’s reality\, each painting honoring the aliveness and richness of California’s landscapes. This multimedia experiment\, with the exhibit being available both on-site and virtually\, will offer the audience the opportunity to expand their imagination\, stepping into the life of a tree from multiple vantage points. Consider the world from the plants’ perspective: begin going wild. \nFrom childhood in Topanga\, California\, Melina Sempill Watts interconnected with the outdoors.  After UCLA\, (B.A.\, history\,) Watts worked in Hollywood for Peter Horton\, Ed Zwick\, Kathleen Kennedy and Dreamworks before moving into conservation.  Published in Sierra Magazine\, Earth Island Journal and the New York Times\, Tree is her first novel. \nJeff Sojka grew up in the Bay Area\, sailing\, hiking and painting.  Earning an art scholarship after high school\, Sojka toured the great museums of Europe\, studying and painting.  After UCSB\, then SDSU\, he joined an ad agency\, leaving to paint iconic California landscapes that glow with an internal luminosity. \nThe show starts on Friday\, August 26\, 2022 and runs through October 2\, 2022.\nThe exhibit is held in tandem with an event series. \nMade possible in part by Arts Ventura

SUMMARY:Ivor Davis: Up Close and Personal with Dianne Lake
DESCRIPTION:“At age 14\, I became one of Charles Manson’s Girls. At 17 I helped put him in prison. This is my story.” – Dianne Lake \nDianne Lake was a beautiful and innocent wide eyed seventh grade student – whose hippie parents abandoned their traditional suburban lifestyle to join The Wavy Gravy’s Hog Farm Commune in Tujunga\, California. Along the way her parents met a man named Charles Manson. They were so impressed by him that\, as unbelievable as it sounds\, they turned their young daughter over to Manson. Dianne was just 14. What happened next is a personal odyssey that is hard to believe. She travelled with Manson’s ragtag band of runaways and social misfits until they settled at the notorious Spahn Movie Ranch in Chatsworth\, California. She became chattel\, a slave to Manson’s sexual whims and part of his depraved world of mind-blowing drugs which culminated in a series of horrendous\, high profile Los Angeles murders in the summer of 1969. While never involved with any murders\, Dianne was arrested and her life was almost destroyed. Today\, in her late sixties\, she is a devout\, church-going grandmother who lives in Ventura County. \nMuseum members who register for this event (either in person or via Zoom) will be entered into a drawing to receive an autographed copy of Ivor Davis’ “Manson Exposed: A Reporter’s 50-Year Journey into Madness and Murder” and Dianne Lake’s “Member of the Family.” Become a member now and register for this event for your opportunity to receive the autographed book. \nDoors open at 6pm\, program begins at 6:30pm. \nRegistration for Zoom closes at 4:30pm on March 24th. \nProof of vaccination will be required on arrival for in-person attendees. Masks will not be required for this event. If you want a mask\, we’re happy to provide one for you. \nMember In-Person RSVP\nMember Zoom RSVP\nNon-Member In-Person RSVP\nNon-Member Zoom RSVP

SUMMARY:Family Fun Day: Persian New Year Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Bring in the beginning of Spring and the\nPersian New Year with family and friends at the Museum of Ventura County.\nJoin the celebration and learn more about the Persian New Year\, called Nowruz\, with crafts and music. Nowruz translates to “new day” and is celebrated on the Spring equinox by millions of people across the globe as a season of rebirth and good luck. One popular feature of Nowruz is the haft-seen\, a table decorated with seven items that begin with the letter “seen” in Farsi and other things of significance. Come see our beautiful haft-seen and make your own things to take home or add to the community table\, like tissue paper hyacinths\, painted eggs\, and egg-carton goldfish. Dance to the upbeat and festive Iranian music and listen to poems commemorating the start of spring. This cultural event will be a fun afternoon for families and adults alike! \nProof of vaccination will be required on arrival for in-person attendees over 12 years of age. Masks will not be required for this event. If you would like a mask\, we’re happy to provide one for you. \nBrought to you in part by the\ngenerous support of\nAera Energy
