SUMMARY:Las Posadas
DESCRIPTION:Free to the Public!\nBrought to you by the Museum of Ventura County in partnership with De Colores Multicultural Folk Arts. \nLas Posadas\, (The Inns in Spanish) is a Latinx traditional holiday that commemorates the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of lodging and a safe refuge for Mary to give birth to Jesus. After nine days of searching for lodging (Las Posadas are celebrated December 16th through 24th\, representing the nine (9) days)\, an Innkeeper gave Mary and Joseph shelter in a stable as there was no room at the inns.  \nA traditional procession always is refused lodging continuing to other waypoints. This year we will begin with a candlelight procession in memory of those we have lost during the pandemic and have experienced undue hardships.  \nThe gathering will start at 6:00 p.m.\, at the Universalist Unitarian Church in the heart of historic downtown Santa Paula with Rev. Maddie Sifantus\, who will begin with a convocation. The procession will be led by Javier Gómez and Lorenzo Lencho Moraza with traditional Las Posadas music provided by Inlakech Cultural Arts Center and De Colores Music youth groups. Mayor Rev. Jenny Crosswhite of First Christian Church\, Elvia Hernandez of Esperanza/Our Lady of Guadalupe Church\, and Pastor Lupita Alonso of El Buen Pastor Church will participate. \nSheet music will be provided in Spanish\, courtesy of Javier Gómez\, and participants are encouraged to sing along. The walk will end at the Agriculture Museum (approximately 6:50 p.m.) for more singing and music\, luminary treat bags for the youth\, and a life-size nativity scene. See procession route for more details. This event takes place outdoors at night\, so flashlights\, warm clothing\, and comfortable footwear are highly recommended.   \nProcession Route: Begin at 6:00 p.m. \nUniversalist Unitarian Church at 740 East Main Street heading eastbound take \na left on N. SUMMARY:Arte Para la Gente – Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The opening reception for Arte Para la Gente: The Collected Works of Margaret Garcia was on November 13\, 2021. Arte Para la Gente explores artist Margaret Garcia’s vast body of work that captures and encapsulates culture\, family\, and urban life. Over the past four decades\, Margaret Garcia has been a leader in the L.A. Chicano Art Movement\, championing women\, community\, and those individuals who are marginalized by society. As a teacher and mentor\, Margaret has inspired and encouraged artists to challenge their talents. Her students are encouraged to reach into their souls and create art that is authentic to self\, and reflects their passion for the subjects they are painting. Many of those artists have emerged and found their unique voices in their artwork. Her most recent works\, many shown here for the first time\, were painted in Ventura County. Arte Para la Gente is on display at the Museum of Ventura County from November 11\, 2021 to Spring 2022. \nPromotional support for Arte Para la Gente generously provided by Lazer Broadcasting KXLM 102.9 • KLJR 96.7 • KOXR 102.1 \nArte Para la Gente made possible in part by the support of The Port of Hueneme

SUMMARY:Local History Happy Hour with Alicia Doyle
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Ventura County invites you to join us for the next installment of our bi-monthly Zoom series\, Local History Happy Hour. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, July 27\, 2021\, from 5—6 PM for the next episode featuring Alicia Doyle\, author of “Fighting Chance.” Admission is free with registration. \nVentura resident Alicia Doyle is an award-winning journalist and the author of Fighting Chance\, which won First Place in Creative Nonfiction in the 2020 North Street Book Prize Winning Writers Competition. Judges of this competition stated: “During this difficult year\, we were happy to read an upbeat account of endurance and empowerment.” Based on a true story\, Fighting Chance is about Alicia’s discovery of boxing at age 28 in the 1990s when she went on assignment at a boxing gym for at-risk youth. For two years\, she worked as a newspaper reporter while competing as a boxer\, making her one of only 400 women in America who infiltrated this male-dominated sport. During her boxing career\, Alicia won two Golden Gloves championship titles\, and her pro debut at age 30 in the year 2000 was named The California Female Fight of the Year. As a journalist with more than 25 years of experience\, Alicia has covered a range of topics\, from crime to sports to special education. With an affinity for human interest stories\, she has written hundreds of thousands of articles about inspirational people\, places\, events and organizations that have a positive impact on the community and world at large. \nMore about Alicia Doyle’s career can be found on her website at www.aliciadoyle.com. \n Local History Happy Hour will return in August.
