SUMMARY:Save the Pollinators: A Youth-Led Environmental Restoration Project Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that our pollinators are in jeopardy? 95% of pollinator populations have decreased since the 1980s\, 75% of our world’s flowering plants rely on pollination to reproduce. Can you imagine a life without oranges\, chocolate or even coffee? That’s the world we face if pollinators go extinct. \nThe Save the Pollinators Project was developed by youth in Ojai to combat this problem. Teens decided the best solution to the declining pollinator populations was to create habitat through a community restoration project-the Green Valley Project Pollinator Corridor. This Pollinator Corridor is a network of pollinator gardens throughout Ventura County that will promote healthy habitats for birds\, bees and butterflies as they migrate through our valley. Youth designed and planted three large educational gardens and dispersed pollinator kits throughout our community to spread awareness about the pollinator problem and create a solution. \n \nPlease join us on Friday\, June 17th from 5PM-7PM at the Museum of Agriculture for our exhibit opening\, Save the Pollinators – A Youth Led Environmental Restoration Project\, if you would like to learn more about this project! Through photography\, music\, and art our teens hope to share everything that they learned while working to save the pollinators!

SUMMARY:Poesia Para la Gente
DESCRIPTION:Free Event \nPoesia Para la Gente is an ekphrastic reading by Latinx women poets in honor of Arte Para la Gente: The Collected Works of Margaret Garcia. This special intimate event will be hosted by the prolific Marsha de la O. \nMelinda Palacio’s novel\, Ocotillo Dreams received the Josephine Miles Award. Her poetry book\, How Fire Is a Story\, Waiting\, a finalist for the Milt Kessler and Paterson Prizes\, received First Prize in Poetry at the 2013 ILBA. The cover portrait is included in Arte Para La Gente by artist Margaret Garcia. In 2015\, her work was featured at Academy of American Poets\,. Bird Forgiveness is her latest poetry book. During the pandemic\, she started writing songs. \nCrystal AC Salas is a Xicanx poet\, essayist\, educator\, and community organizer. A 2021 California Arts Council Individual Artist Grant Recipient\, her chapbook Grief Logic is forthcoming in April 2022 from Gunpowder Press. \nEmma Trelles is the poet laureate of Santa Barbara and the author of Tropicalia (U. of Notre Dame Press)\, winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize. She is writing a second collection of poems titled Courage and the Clock. The daughter of Cuban immigrants\, she has received fellowships from CantoMundo and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. She teaches at Santa Barbara City College and curates the Mission Poetry Series. \nLuzmarie Espinosa is the poet laureate of Ventura County and has been an activist for social change through art for decades. In 1979\, she became a member of the Royal Chicano Air Force\, a Sacramento-based art collective involved in theater and performance poetry\, which advanced the cause of the United Farm Workers movement. She also taught and performed with Danza Azteca on the Central Coast and performed in theater productions throughout California\, including Teatro Inlakech of Oxnard. \nCorinne Contreras is a performance poet who goes by Crn. Crn is a poet from the San Francisco Bay Area\, currently residing on California’s central coast. They began writing poetry in grade school as a means of entertaining friends. Crn’s style still aims at entertainment with the hopes of evoking the reader to think about choices we make when weighing our First World Problems. \nProof of vaccination will be required on arrival for in-person attendees over 12 years of age. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a one of a kind day trip to Santa Cruz Island to paint with acclaimed artist Margaret Garcia and naturalist Cliff Rodrigues! We will provide a box lunch from Peirano’s for attendees. All participants should bring their water bottles and art supplies. Participants are welcome to create with oil paints\, watercolors\, ink\, pencils\, or take photographs!  This event is limited to 30 adult attendees. \n$125 for members\, $175 for nonmembers. \nRegister \nWeather Cancellation Policy: In case of unfavorable weather or sea conditions\, Island Packers will cancel at 5:30 AM on the day of the trip. On the morning of your departure after 5:30 AM\, please call 805-642-1393\, select option (4)\, and listen to the status of your trip. Island Packers will not contact you for weather cancellation. If time permits\, Island Packers will attempt to email cancellations. \nCheck-in: Check-in at Ventura Harbor at 8am\, 9am is the departure time. Attendees must arrive by 8:15am or risk not being able to attend. All passengers must sign in to receive a boarding pass before getting on the boat. Be ready with an emergency contact phone number when you sign in. \nPreparation for your trip: \n\nBring food and water for your time ashore. Pack food in closed containers or backpacks to protect it from the animals. (Do not feed them.)\nThere are fox box food storage areas for use in the picnic areas. Other belongings may be left near the beach while hiking.\nDress in comfortable layers of clothing to be prepared for variable weather. Sunscreen and hats are recommended.\nBring a warm jacket for the boat. Wear low-heeled\, rubber-soled shoes with good tread—no high heels.\nCameras and binoculars are great to bring along.\nSingle-use plastic bags are not permitted on the boat or the island.\nAny item weighing more than 45 lbs\, including ice chests\, will not be transported.\nAll containers of solvent must have their name on the container as they will be put in a locker until we arrive\, as they are flammable. We recommend that participants carry them in a sealed metal container. DESCRIPTION:The book is intended for ages 8 and up and was written as something for families to read and experience together. \n12:30PM – Student musicians from the Inlakech Cultural Center in Oxnard will be coming to play and welcome Dolores Huerta to the Agriculture Museum.\n1:00PM – Books are available for purchase (all proceeds donated by Mr. Figueroa to the MVC)\, and Mr. Figueroa is available to sign copies\n2:00PM – Reading from El Oz by author David Damian Figueroa\nFollowed by Q&A session with labor rights legend Dolores Huerta. \nAuthor\, producer and farmworker rights activist David Damian Figueroa debuts his second book\, “El Oz\,” a new children’s book for ages 8 and up that centers around Dolores\, a young Mexican girl from a fictitious town El Pueblito de los Milagros\, and her chihuahua named Pepito who find themselves in a strange land after a violent rainstorm. There\, they encounter a series of fantastical characters and wild adventures as they seek the elusive El Oz to help them return to their home. David Damian grew up working in the fields in Buckeye and Yuma\, Arizona – the birthplace of Cesar Chavez. A hummingbird guides them to the guardian Necaxa\, who gives Dolores a red heart-shaped necklace for protection\, and instructs Dolores to follow her own heart down a talavera tiled path to Ozlandia to meet El Oz. Only he can help her to return home. Along the way\, Dolores and Pepito meet Necaxa\, Los Chiquitos\, El Empresario\, and befriend Welo\, Hierro\, and El Leon. They help protect them from the evil and wicked La Chaquetza and Los Malalas. \nAbout the Author: David Damian Figueroa is an activist\, community organizer\, storyteller\, poet\, filmmaker\, and music producer who grew up working in the agricultural fields of Southern Arizona. As a child\, his mother taught him the art of positivity through traditional Mexican regional songs\, storytelling\, and dichos (sayings) to help pass the time during long hot days in the agricultural fields and when they cleaned houses together. David Damian has previously published: “A Reminder to My Twenty-Three-Year-Old Self: A Book of Quotes\, Thoughts on Life\, and Personal Wisdom. El Oz is his second book. David Damian is executive producer of “Pepe Serna Life is Art\,” a documentary about the amazing life and career of veteran actor Pepe Serna. The film was an Official Selection of The Palm Springs Film Festival. David Damian also produced “Abuelo\,” a short film starring Pepe Serna which is admitted to the 2022 Cannes Film Festival’s Market Section. He is also executive producer on “Food Chains\,” a documentary about the plight of U.S. farmworkers that premiered at Berlinale – The Berlin International Film Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Many recognize Bob Eubanks as a TV personality and game show host\, best known for hosting the explosively popular “The Newlywed Game.” In this fun evening\, you will learn so much more about Bob\, including the little-known story of how meeting the Beatles helped launch his career\, and all the twists and turns that recently earned him a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award. \nWhat you may not know is that in 1964 Bob Eubanks was a bright-eyed and increasingly popular DJ in Southern California when the opportunity of a lifetime popped up. Did he want to be the concert promotor at the legendary Hollywood Bowl to present a hot new group from Liverpool who were about to embark on their first tour of America?  You bet he did! But there was one big problem: they demanded a huge chunk of upfront money to clinch the deal–and Eubanks didn’t have that kind of cash. So he gambled. He persuaded a bank to get a massive loan on his home to promote a rock group from England no one had ever seen live! He did it\, and the rest is history. DESCRIPTION:Not If But When – An event featuring wildfire awareness and recovery – presented by the Ventura County Library\, the Museum of Ventura County\, and the Ventura County Library Foundation. \nThe Ventura County Library Foundation and the Museum of Ventura County are partnering with the Ventura County Library to present an upcoming special event. At 2pm on Saturday\, April 23\, 2022\, the Ventura County Library will host a screening of Radu Sava’s film Not If But When: Wildfire Solutions. This event will occur at the Museum (100 E Main St\, Ventura\, CA 93001). The film\, awarded Best Environmental Visions Film at the Sacramento International Film Festival\, discusses how wildfires are becoming a global issue. California is one of the places that is hit the hardest. Please read the description and save the date. \nThe Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC) owns and manages over 2\,000 acres throughout the Ventura River Valley. OVLC’s mission is to protect and restore open space\, wildlife habitat\, watersheds\, and scenic beauty in the Ojai Valley for future generations. OVLC preserves are open to the public. \nOVLC is actively restoring native plants and has constructed excellent hiking and biking trails on their preserves. DESCRIPTION:“At age 14\, I became one of Charles Manson’s Girls. At 17 I helped put him in prison. This is my story.” – Dianne Lake \nDianne Lake was a beautiful and innocent wide eyed seventh grade student – whose hippie parents abandoned their traditional suburban lifestyle to join The Wavy Gravy’s Hog Farm Commune in Tujunga\, California. Along the way her parents met a man named Charles Manson. They were so impressed by him that\, as unbelievable as it sounds\, they turned their young daughter over to Manson. Dianne was just 14. What happened next is a personal odyssey that is hard to believe. She travelled with Manson’s ragtag band of runaways and social misfits until they settled at the notorious Spahn Movie Ranch in Chatsworth\, California. She became chattel\, a slave to Manson’s sexual whims and part of his depraved world of mind-blowing drugs which culminated in a series of horrendous\, high profile Los Angeles murders in the summer of 1969. While never involved with any murders\, Dianne was arrested and her life was almost destroyed. DESCRIPTION:Free to the Public!\nBrought to you by the Museum of Ventura County in partnership with De Colores Multicultural Folk Arts. \nLas Posadas\, (The Inns in Spanish) is a Latinx traditional holiday that commemorates the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of lodging and a safe refuge for Mary to give birth to Jesus. After nine days of searching for lodging (Las Posadas are celebrated December 16th through 24th\, representing the nine (9) days)\, an Innkeeper gave Mary and Joseph shelter in a stable as there was no room at the inns.  \nA traditional procession always is refused lodging continuing to other waypoints. This year we will begin with a candlelight procession in memory of those we have lost during the pandemic and have experienced undue hardships.  \nThe gathering will start at 6:00 p.m.\, at the Universalist Unitarian Church in the heart of historic downtown Santa Paula with Rev. Maddie Sifantus\, who will begin with a convocation. The procession will be led by Javier Gómez and Lorenzo Lencho Moraza with traditional Las Posadas music provided by Inlakech Cultural Arts Center and De Colores Music youth groups. Mayor Rev. Jenny Crosswhite of First Christian Church\, Elvia Hernandez of Esperanza/Our Lady of Guadalupe Church\, and Pastor Lupita Alonso of El Buen Pastor Church will participate. \nSheet music will be provided in Spanish\, courtesy of Javier Gómez\, and participants are encouraged to sing along. The walk will end at the Agriculture Museum (approximately 6:50 p.m.) for more singing and music\, luminary treat bags for the youth\, and a life-size nativity scene. See procession route for more details. This event takes place outdoors at night\, so flashlights\, warm clothing\, and comfortable footwear are highly recommended.   \nProcession Route: Begin at 6:00 p.m. \nUniversalist Unitarian Church at 740 East Main Street heading eastbound take \na left on N. Mills St. Cross over So. Santa Barbara St. and the railroad tracks \nto the city park area in front of the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum \nat 926 Railroad Ave. Route distance covers half a mile.
