SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Ventura County announces a collaboration with the Santa Paula Art Museum and Pierce Brothers Cemetery for a community-wide Día de los Muertos celebration on Sunday\, October 30\, 2022\, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. Additionally\, the Museum invites members of the community to pay homage to Carmen Ramirez in two ways: by visiting the ofrendas honoring her during the celebration\, and through contributing to the Carmen Ramirez Remembrance Collection. \nAs one of three celebration sites located in Santa Paula\, the Agriculture Museum will host performances by Danza Azteca Tonantzin and Grupo Folklorico Lindas Raizes\, display ofrendas created by community partners\, and provide fun youth-friendly craft activities and face-painting by Jenny’s Face Canvas. This is a drop-in free event with no preregistration required.  Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Santa Paula Art Museum from 12-3pm and Pierce Brothers Cemetery from 11am-5pm for additional celebrations. Those who attend all three sites will be entered into a raffle at the end of the day held at Pierce Brothers Cemetery. \nCommunity partners E.J. Harrison\, The Quilt Project Gold Coast\, The Santa Paula Youth Center\, and Poder Popular are helping to construct the ofrendas which will be on display at the Agriculture Museum of Santa Paula from October 30th to November 6th. On Día de los Muertos\, November 2nd\, attendees are invited to contribute flowers\, photographs and decorative objects to the Museum’s open altar space in honor of loved ones who have passed. Please note\, the return of items is not guaranteed. \nOfrendas built by The Santa Paula Latino Town Hall and De Colores Multicultural Folk Art\, Inc. will honor the memory of Carmen Ramirez. Community members will have the opportunity to pay their respects by participating in this cultural celebration\, and by contributing to the Museum’s new Carmen Ramirez Remembrance Collection.  “Carmen Ramirez lived her life enriching the community of Ventura County. The Museum is grateful to have the chance to continue her legacy by inviting the community to celebrate her memory this Día de Los Muertos\,” said the Barbara Barnard Smith Chief Executive Officer Elena Brokaw. As a pillar of the community\, Ramirez’ impact cannot be fully represented through official records like newspapers and reports. Museum of Ventura County is therefore actively collecting stories\, photographs\, audio recordings\, videos\, posters and artwork to record and preserve the meaningful contributions that Carmen Ramirez made to Ventura County. The community can view the collection\, and make a contribution online at: photographs.venturamuseum.org/contribution \nSponsored by EJ Harrison & Sons

SUMMARY:Going Wild Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:For novelist Melina Sempill Watts and artist Jeff Sojka\, falling in love with a landscape means interconnecting the lives of the plants and animals that make it alive.  Watts’ first novel Tree is an exploration of 229 years in the life of a California live oak from the point of view of … the tree.  Sojka dove into the book and painted his vision of the tree’s reality\, each painting honoring the aliveness and richness of California’s landscapes. This multimedia experiment\, with the exhibit being available both on-site and virtually\, will offer the audience the opportunity to expand their imagination\, stepping into the life of a tree from multiple vantage points. Consider the world from the plants’ perspective: begin going wild. \nFrom childhood in Topanga\, California\, Melina Sempill Watts interconnected with the outdoors.  After UCLA\, (B.A.\, history\,) Watts worked in Hollywood for Peter Horton\, Ed Zwick\, Kathleen Kennedy and Dreamworks before moving into conservation.  Published in Sierra Magazine\, Earth Island Journal and the New York Times\, Tree is her first novel. \nJeff Sojka grew up in the Bay Area\, sailing\, hiking and painting.  Earning an art scholarship after high school\, Sojka toured the great museums of Europe\, studying and painting.  After UCSB\, then SDSU\, he joined an ad agency\, leaving to paint iconic California landscapes that glow with an internal luminosity. \nThe show starts on Friday\, August 26\, 2022 and runs through October 2\, 2022.\nThe exhibit is held in tandem with an event series. \nMade possible in part by Arts Ventura

SUMMARY:Save the Pollinators: A Youth-Led Environmental Restoration Project Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that our pollinators are in jeopardy? 95% of pollinator populations have decreased since the 1980s\, 75% of our world’s flowering plants rely on pollination to reproduce. Can you imagine a life without oranges\, chocolate or even coffee? That’s the world we face if pollinators go extinct. \nThe Save the Pollinators Project was developed by youth in Ojai to combat this problem. Teens decided the best solution to the declining pollinator populations was to create habitat through a community restoration project-the Green Valley Project Pollinator Corridor. This Pollinator Corridor is a network of pollinator gardens throughout Ventura County that will promote healthy habitats for birds\, bees and butterflies as they migrate through our valley. Youth designed and planted three large educational gardens and dispersed pollinator kits throughout our community to spread awareness about the pollinator problem and create a solution. \n \nPlease join us on Friday\, June 17th from 5PM-7PM at the Museum of Agriculture for our exhibit opening\, Save the Pollinators – A Youth Led Environmental Restoration Project\, if you would like to learn more about this project! Through photography\, music\, and art our teens hope to share everything that they learned while working to save the pollinators!
