DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Ventura County invites you to join us for the next installment of our bi-monthly Zoom series\, Local History Happy Hour. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, July 27\, 2021\, from 5—6 PM for the next episode featuring Alicia Doyle\, author of “Fighting Chance.” Admission is free with registration. \nVentura resident Alicia Doyle is an award-winning journalist and the author of Fighting Chance\, which won First Place in Creative Nonfiction in the 2020 North Street Book Prize Winning Writers Competition. Judges of this competition stated: “During this difficult year\, we were happy to read an upbeat account of endurance and empowerment.” Based on a true story\, Fighting Chance is about Alicia’s discovery of boxing at age 28 in the 1990s when she went on assignment at a boxing gym for at-risk youth. For two years\, she worked as a newspaper reporter while competing as a boxer\, making her one of only 400 women in America who infiltrated this male-dominated sport. During her boxing career\, Alicia won two Golden Gloves championship titles\, and her pro debut at age 30 in the year 2000 was named The California Female Fight of the Year. As a journalist with more than 25 years of experience\, Alicia has covered a range of topics\, from crime to sports to special education. With an affinity for human interest stories\, she has written hundreds of thousands of articles about inspirational people\, places\, events and organizations that have a positive impact on the community and world at large. \nMore about Alicia Doyle’s career can be found on her website at www.aliciadoyle.com. \n Local History Happy Hour will return in August. This class is Yoga infused with Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”). “Yo-Qi-Ga” is a blend of yoga and qigong to align the body\, calm the mind and soothe the nerves. Qigong is the Chinese word which means “to cultivate the Qi”\, Prana or Life Force.  Alignment based yoga blended with gentle\, meditative movements with the breath.  Appropriate for all levels\, including beginners and seniors. Leave with a calm\, focused and revitalized body\, mind and spirit. Please bring a mat\, water\, and any other props you may need for your practice. (A limited number of mats will be available if you don’t have one.) \nMaria transitioned from dance to yoga when she was five months pregnant with her first child in 1998. Twenty three years later\, she continues to practice\, while currently teaching at the YMCA and at the Wellness & Fitness Center of Community Memorial Hospital.  Her passion is empowering older adults and seniors to improve their own health\, holistically\, through body/mind/spirit practices and healing techniques. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, June 15\, 2021 @ 5—6PM for the next installment featuring Betsy Chess\, author of “Daughter of the Land: Growing Up in the Citrus Capital of the World.” Admission is free with registration. \nYou can preorder your copy of “Daughter of the Land: Growing Up in the Citrus Capital of the World” here. \nBorn in Santa Paula\, California\, Betsy attended high school at the Bishop’s School for Girls in La Jolla and did both graduate and postgraduate work at the University of Southern California\, earning a master of arts degree in modern European history. \nSince 1988\, she has pursued a dual career both as an agricultural journalist and non-profit arts manager\, editing and publishing the Central Coast Farm & Ranch magazine while serving in top executive positions for the New West Symphony\, the Rubicon Theater Company and the Museum of Ventura County. \nBetsy has been recognized numerous times for her work in the arts and the community. She has earned five Paul Harris awards from the Rotary Club of Ventura; received a Woman of Vision award from the Ventura Interfaith Ministerial Association; and an Arts Star award from the Ventura County Arts Council. \nAdditionally\, she was honored by Women’s Economic Ventures as a Trailblazer; chosen Ventura County Volunteer of the year by the American Society of Fundraising Professionals; and named one of the “25 over 50” by the Ventura County Star newspaper. \nLocal History Happy Hour will return in July and August. SUMMARY:“The Weed Project” Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Martin V. & Martha K. Smith Pavilion at the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3—5PM for the opening reception of The Weed Project: Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden. This new exhibit by the comical and brave Charlene Spiller features thirteen botanical paintings with an ecological message. There will be refreshments and a no-host bar. Visitors will also be able to explore the new and refreshed Children’s Garden. Admission is free with registration. \nIn the macro-style paintings of The Weed Project\, Charlene Spiller draws a plumb line between art and science. She creates a new category of “bloom”\, challenging the viewer’s expectation of what constitutes beauty. All the while\, pollinating their mind with provocative thoughts about our health\, the health of our planet\, and the bottom-line of a multibillion-dollar corporation – with a multibillion-dollar legal-relief reserve – and places it all under our microscope. Deputy Director\, Denise Sindelar states\, “Ms. Spiller’s paintings highlight the beauty that exists in our fragile\, and often forgotten natural world”. \nThroughout the recent pandemic\, and our governor’s Stay-Well-At-Home Order\, Spiller has transferred to canvas a destructive environmental discovery\, healing perspectives\, and reasons to continue on\, with vigilance – literally healing herself out of hospice care and advancing steadily toward wellness. Spiller says\, “Herbicides are a dangerous game. Roundup\, which came into being in the 1970s – first used as a chemical cleaner for pipes – is now sprayed on our food crops\, almost un-checked. The Weed Project is one of providing awareness.” \nOriginally from San Francisco\, Ms. Spiller studied at the California College of the Arts\, Oakland\, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She has lived in Southern California for 25-years\, previously in the Palm Desert\, and now\, in the Hollywood Beach-area of Oxnard\, where the beach meets the fields (or the ocean meets the glyphosate). \nThe Weeds Project: “Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden” will surprise Museum visitors with its vivid lines\, vibrant palette\, pollinating parts aplenty\, and facts that just may save our lives.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the museums for Mindfulness at the Museum\, new weekly free wellness classes outside in the gardens at the Museum of Ventura County and the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. \nYou can participate at the Museum of Ventura County (100 E. Main St.\, Ventura) on Thursdays from 4—5pm and at the Agriculture Museum (926 Railroad Ave.\, Santa Paula) on Saturdays from 10—11am in Santa Paula. \nThese classes provide fun and free activities for individuals and families. Beginners are encouraged to participate. All classes are free. Classes are limited and registration is required. MVC Members will have the opportunity to register first. Consider becoming an MVC Member today! \nRegister to join us for Yoga for Spanish Speakers with Rafaela on Saturday\, June 12 @ 10M at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. A dynamic class that is intended to be for all levels of practitioners\, which supports body awareness\, breath\, and connection to self. This practice offers a variety of postures that meet the students where they are and inspires students to be curious and aware of their breath and body\, encouraging  them to lean into the discomfort of knowing the self a little deeper. \nPlease bring a mat\, water\, and any other props you may need for your practice. (A limited number of mats will be available if you don’t have one.) \nEsta  clase dinámica es para todos los niveles y perfecta  para principiantes.  Se ofrece una variedad de posturas\, que ayudan a conectar la respiración\, el movimiento\, y la mente. La meta es cultivar la curiosidad sobre la practica de yoga en cual cada persona puede crecer  y  cultivar un gran respeto para nosotros mismos y nuestros cuerpos. \nPor favor traiga un tapete\, agua y cualquier otro accesorio que pueda necesitar para tu práctica. \n(Un número limitado de tapetes estará disponible si no tienes uno). \nRafaela was born and raised in Ventura County. Through a committed asana practice she was able to overcome personal barriers and cultivate growth and healing. After years of practicing yoga\, she received her 200-hour RYT certification from Jai Rhythm in early 2020\, followed by 100 hours virtual training on anatomy and sequencing with Bhavani Maki in October 2020. She has most recently gone through 30-hour Accessible Yoga training with Jivana Heyman. She loves being a student as much as she loves being a teacher and is always ready to learn more\, to share and connect with all of you. \nRafaela es nacida en el condado de Ventura. A traves de su propia practica de yoga\, Rafaela a podido superar ciertas barreras personales\, cultivar el crecimiento personal y sanción inmensa. Después de años de practicar yoga\, recibió su certificación de 200 horas de el estudio Jai Rhythm en Ventura y en seguida tomo un entrenamiento virtual de 100 horas sobre anatomía con Bhavani Maki. Recientemente ha pasado por un entrenamiento de Yoga Accesible de 30 horas con Jivana Heyman. This online event is free to attend with registration. \nAs the pandemic has shown\, communities need to be more resilient\, inclusive and connected. Governments need to rethink the use and management of public spaces\, infrastructure and essential services and their responses are influenced by many factors — resources\, regulations\, socio-economic inequalities\, political will and public awareness. As cities rethink how to activate\, integrate and mainstream grassroot responses into their efforts\, they must also tackle the underlying stresses of inequality and inclusion as exposed by the pandemic. A tall order to fill\, but where to begin? \nMark di Cecco\, AIA East County and Chair of Moorpark General Plan Advisory Committee will be joined by Nicholas Deitch\, AIA West County and Member of Ventura General Plan Advisory Committee\, Jerffrey Lambert\, ACIP and Chief Operating Officer at the Ventura County Community Foundation\, and Lynn C. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, May 18\, 2021\, from 5—6 PM for the next episode featuring Jeffrey Maulhardt\, author of “A History of Oxnard.” Admission is free with registration. \nJeffrey Wayne Maulhardt was born in Oxnard and is a fifth-generation Ventura County descendant of the Maulhardt and Borchard families. Jeffrey’s deep connections to the area helped in his accumulation of images\, used to document the city’s history beyond his two previous titles in the Images of “America Series: Oxnard: 1867-1940” and “Oxnard: 1941-2004.” \nJeffrey Maulhardt taught American History for thirty years in the Oxnard Elementary School District\, and is now is working on his 16th local history book for Arcadia Publishing\, “Oxnard Now & Then.” He is the founder of the Oxnard Historic Farm Park and his books can be purchased at the Oxnard Historic Farm Park Foundation website. \nLocal History Happy Hour will return in June\, July\, and August. Alamillo\, author of Deportes: The Making of a Sporting Diaspora. Admission is free with registration. \nJosé A. Alamillo is professor of Chicana/o Studies at California State University Channel Islands (Camarillo\, CA) and author of Making Lemonade out of Lemons: Mexican American Labor and Leisure in a California Town and co-author of Latinos in U.S. Sport. He is a consultant on Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History exhibition on Latinos and Latinas in baseball. \nDeportes: The Making of a Sporting Diaspora uncovers the hidden experiences of Mexican male and female athletes\, teams and leagues and their supporters who fought for a more level playing field on both sides of the border. Despite a widespread belief that Mexicans shunned physical exercise\, teamwork or “good sportsmanship\,” they proved that they could compete in a wide variety of sports at amateur\, semiprofessional\, Olympic and professional levels. Some even made their mark in the sports world by becoming the “first” Mexican athlete to reach the big leagues and win Olympic medals or world boxing and tennis titles.
