DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT \nFREE Presentation by Jan Timbrook\, Ph.D.\nCurator Emeritus of Ethnography\, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History \nChumash people have used over 150 species of plants for food\, medicine\, raw materials for making clothing\, tools and utensils\, religious practices\, and other items essential to existence. Equally important are the ways in which the Chumash have thought about plants and been affected by them. Dr. Timbrook’s informative\, illustrated talk will provide a glimpse into the fascinating plant world of the Chumash\, including the complex interrelationships between the first people of our region and the environment in which they lived. \nAt 3:00\, the hi stok’oy hil xus Chumash Cultural Group will share alternatives for invasive species and activities fun for the whole family; plant your own milkweed\, peel some ‘ixpaniš (acorns)\, and make a beautiful bracelet from ‘ixpaniš (acorns) and ‘ančum (Olivella shells)! \nAbout the speaker: \nJan Timbrook\, Ph.D.\nJan Timbrook\, Ph.D.\, is an anthropologist and ethnobiologist. Her specialty is the indigenous Chumash people of the Santa Barbara region\, particularly their uses of plants in food\, medicine and basketry. Former District Attorney Mike Bradbury will discuss his book Law and Disorder: Confessions of a District Attorney with current District Attorney Erik Nasarenko. \nMichael Bradbury is the longest serving DA in Ventura County history. Bradbury stepped down at the end of his sixth term in 2003. During his tenure of 24 years\, the Ventura DA’s office was recognized as one of the most innovative prosecution offices in the nation\, and Ventura County was judged by the FBI the safest county west of the Mississippi. In his memoir\, Bradbury shares stories of his time as District Attorney\, giving readers an intimate glimpse into the justice system.  Current DA Erik Nasarenko was recently sworn-in at the Museum of Ventura County\, and he is pleased to return to MVC to interview this paragon of justice in our County. \nSponsored By

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday\, March 4 from 2—4pm in the Children’s Garden for a special book launch of Coyote Rescues Hawk: A Chumash Story and reading by Alan Salazar and Mona Lewis. Books will be available for purchase. Admission is free. \nAlan Salazar is a traditional storyteller and elder in the Ferdandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and Chumash tribes. His Tataviam ancestry comes from the Tataviam village of Chaguayanga near Castaic\, Californa and his Chumash ancestry from the Chumash village of Ta’apu\, near Simi Valley.  Alan is actively involved in protecting his ancestor’s village sites and tribal territories.  \nAs a member of the Chumash Maritime Association\, he helped build the first working traditional Chumash plank tomol\, canoe\, in modern times and has paddled in plank canoes for over 22 years.  \nMona Lewis is an artist and arts educator in Los Angeles and Ventura counties\, specializing in revitalizing the lost art of using plant dyes and earth pigments and teaching students how to use them in their work. She has been an educator in Waldorf education 1998\, and is co-director of the Waldorf Practical Arts Teacher Training program. \nMona has illustrated three books for writer Alan Salazar\, exclusively with natural earth pigments. Her own book\, Nature’s Paintbox\, is a collection of easy plant dye and earth pigment projects for artists of all ages.

Their book\, Images of America: Rincon Point\, uncovers the history of this famous and storied surf spot. Admission is free. Copies of Images of America: Rincon Point by Stephen Bates and Vincent Burns will be available for purchase. \nRincon Point is renowned as the Queen of the Coast\, one of the premier surfing spots in the world\, but that is only a fragment of its rich history. Before the arrival of Europeans\, it was a Chumash village called Shuku. In the 19th century\, it was part of Rancho El Rincon\, whose owners included a rich but illiterate Californio rancher\, an English physician who made house calls by bicycle\, and a Chilean pharmacist who dispensed drugs out of an old ship’s cabin. It was the site of a scandalous love-triangle murder in the 1870s\, a rickety highway on stilts in the 1910s\, and a raunchy honky-tonk in the 1920s. Banditos\, nudists\, movie stars\, long-boarders–they have all shaped Rincon Point\, a place immortalized by novelists\, poets\, painters\, photographers\, and the Beach Boys.

SUMMARY:A Year Without You – Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:As a collaboration\, The RAD Foundation & artist Julie Dahl-Nicolle are showcasing\, for thirty days\, “A Year Without You”. This collection of one hundred floral mixed media canvas paintings dives into the realization of what we have all experienced over the last two years due to COVID-19: a sense of loss. Whether that be the loss of loved ones or a loss of what could have been – everyone has been impacted by this year’s events. This exhibition of paintings by artist Julie Dahl-Nicolle\, displayed in the MVC Pavilion\, will bring acceptance and understanding to loss all while giving us hope & joy for the future ahead.  \nDuring opening night\, there will be a live participation portion of the evening where guests can participate in hanging their clouties – an homage to the Irish Rag Tree tradition. Clouties are sometimes left as gestures of acknowledgement and respect for the spirits of the land\, and sometimes as prayers requesting general blessings or specific aid from those same spirits. The Crann Bethadh also known as The Celtic Tree was a connection to the world of the spirits and the ancestors\, living entities\, and doorways into other worlds.
