Consider becoming an MVC Member today! \nRegister to join us for Tai Chi and Medication with Bhante Sutadhara on Thursday\, June 24 @ 4PM at the Museum of Ventura County. Tai chi is often called “moving meditation\,” but those who practice it consistently often refer to it as “moving medication.” Tai chi is a great mindful exercise. Tai chi is a traditional Chinese martial art that has been practiced over centuries for self-development. This practice connects the mind\, the spirit and your body. Tai chi is comprised of a sequence of slow movements that gracefully flow from one to another. We will also practice and discuss stationary meditation techniques. Meditation has many definitions and meanings. In the West\, it often refers to thinking something over or reflection. For Buddhists\, meditation is a spiritual discipline that utilizes the power of attention to help us along the path of awakening. \nDirector\, Ventura Buddhist Study Center Tripitakavedi (Bachelor of Buddhist Textual studies)\, B.A.(Sri Lanka)\, M.A.(Hawaii). \nVenerable Tapovanaye Sutadhara entered the order of Buddhist Monks as a novice in 1966\, at Tapovanaya Buddhist Monastery\, Mulleriyawa-New Town\, Sri Lanka\, under the tutelage of Late-Venerable Kudawelle Vangeesa Maha Thero\, a renowned Meditation Master in Insight Meditation and Venerable Dodampahala Chandrasiri Maha Thero\, Patriarch\, Sri Kalyanivansa Chapter of Amarapura Sect\, Sri Lanka. \nHe was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Linguistics\, University of Kelaniya\, \nSri Lanka. During his career as an academic he held following administrative positions: \n(1) Head\, Department of Linguistics\, (2) Coordinator\, M.A. Degree Program (by Course work)\, (3) Head\, English Language Teaching Unit\, and (4) Senior Student Counselor.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Boroughs Children’s Garden at the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday\, June 19th from 11am—2pm to celebrate local artist MB Hanrahan’s new Chumash Village mural. Consider becoming an MVC Member today! \nRegister to join us for Yoga with Maria Tuason Combs on Saturday\, June 19 @ 10M at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. This class is Yoga infused with Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”). “Yo-Qi-Ga” is a blend of yoga and qigong to align the body\, calm the mind and soothe the nerves. Qigong is the Chinese word which means “to cultivate the Qi”\, Prana or Life Force.  Alignment based yoga blended with gentle\, meditative movements with the breath.  Appropriate for all levels\, including beginners and seniors. Leave with a calm\, focused and revitalized body\, mind and spirit. Please bring a mat\, water\, and any other props you may need for your practice. (A limited number of mats will be available if you don’t have one.) \nMaria transitioned from dance to yoga when she was five months pregnant with her first child in 1998. Twenty three years later\, she continues to practice\, while currently teaching at the YMCA and at the Wellness & Fitness Center of Community Memorial Hospital.  Her passion is empowering older adults and seniors to improve their own health\, holistically\, through body/mind/spirit practices and healing techniques. Maria strives to make yoga accessible and fun for all.  She is a Certified RYT-200 Yoga Instructor and a Certified Accessible Yoga Instructor. Maria believes everyone can alleviate many stresses in their daily lives by activating their own healing powers via yoga\, qigong and tai chi.  She received her certifications as a “Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance”   Volunteer Instructor and  “Healer Within” Qigong Practice Leader in 2018. She also enjoys cooking\, hiking\, reading\, snowboarding and spending time with her family. \n“Yoga is my “go to” friend. When all else fails or just isn’t enough\, I can always go back to my mat. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, June 15\, 2021 @ 5—6PM for the next installment featuring Betsy Chess\, author of “Daughter of the Land: Growing Up in the Citrus Capital of the World.” Admission is free with registration. \nYou can preorder your copy of “Daughter of the Land: Growing Up in the Citrus Capital of the World” here. \nBorn in Santa Paula\, California\, Betsy attended high school at the Bishop’s School for Girls in La Jolla and did both graduate and postgraduate work at the University of Southern California\, earning a master of arts degree in modern European history. \nSince 1988\, she has pursued a dual career both as an agricultural journalist and non-profit arts manager\, editing and publishing the Central Coast Farm & Ranch magazine while serving in top executive positions for the New West Symphony\, the Rubicon Theater Company and the Museum of Ventura County. \nBetsy has been recognized numerous times for her work in the arts and the community. She has earned five Paul Harris awards from the Rotary Club of Ventura; received a Woman of Vision award from the Ventura Interfaith Ministerial Association; and an Arts Star award from the Ventura County Arts Council. \nAdditionally\, she was honored by Women’s Economic Ventures as a Trailblazer; chosen Ventura County Volunteer of the year by the American Society of Fundraising Professionals; and named one of the “25 over 50” by the Ventura County Star newspaper. \nLocal History Happy Hour will return in July and August. SUMMARY:“The Weed Project” Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Martin V. & Martha K. Smith Pavilion at the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3—5PM for the opening reception of The Weed Project: Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden. This new exhibit by the comical and brave Charlene Spiller features thirteen botanical paintings with an ecological message. There will be refreshments and a no-host bar. Visitors will also be able to explore the new and refreshed Children’s Garden. Admission is free with registration. \nIn the macro-style paintings of The Weed Project\, Charlene Spiller draws a plumb line between art and science. She creates a new category of “bloom”\, challenging the viewer’s expectation of what constitutes beauty. All the while\, pollinating their mind with provocative thoughts about our health\, the health of our planet\, and the bottom-line of a multibillion-dollar corporation – with a multibillion-dollar legal-relief reserve – and places it all under our microscope. Deputy Director\, Denise Sindelar states\, “Ms. Spiller’s paintings highlight the beauty that exists in our fragile\, and often forgotten natural world”. \nThroughout the recent pandemic\, and our governor’s Stay-Well-At-Home Order\, Spiller has transferred to canvas a destructive environmental discovery\, healing perspectives\, and reasons to continue on\, with vigilance – literally healing herself out of hospice care and advancing steadily toward wellness. Spiller says\, “Herbicides are a dangerous game. Roundup\, which came into being in the 1970s – first used as a chemical cleaner for pipes – is now sprayed on our food crops\, almost un-checked. The Weed Project is one of providing awareness.” \nOriginally from San Francisco\, Ms. Spiller studied at the California College of the Arts\, Oakland\, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She has lived in Southern California for 25-years\, previously in the Palm Desert\, and now\, in the Hollywood Beach-area of Oxnard\, where the beach meets the fields (or the ocean meets the glyphosate). \nThe Weeds Project: “Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden” will surprise Museum visitors with its vivid lines\, vibrant palette\, pollinating parts aplenty\, and facts that just may save our lives.

Through a committed asana practice she was able to overcome personal barriers and cultivate growth and healing. After years of practicing yoga\, she received her 200-hour RYT certification from Jai Rhythm in early 2020\, followed by 100 hours virtual training on anatomy and sequencing with Bhavani Maki in October 2020. She has most recently gone through 30-hour Accessible Yoga training with Jivana Heyman. She loves being a student as much as she loves being a teacher and is always ready to learn more\, to share and connect with all of you. \nRafaela es nacida en el condado de Ventura. A traves de su propia practica de yoga\, Rafaela a podido superar ciertas barreras personales\, cultivar el crecimiento personal y sanción inmensa. Después de años de practicar yoga\, recibió su certificación de 200 horas de el estudio Jai Rhythm en Ventura y en seguida tomo un entrenamiento virtual de 100 horas sobre anatomía con Bhavani Maki. Governments need to rethink the use and management of public spaces\, infrastructure and essential services and their responses are influenced by many factors — resources\, regulations\, socio-economic inequalities\, political will and public awareness. As cities rethink how to activate\, integrate and mainstream grassroot responses into their efforts\, they must also tackle the underlying stresses of inequality and inclusion as exposed by the pandemic. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, May 18\, 2021\, from 5—6 PM for the next episode featuring Jeffrey Maulhardt\, author of “A History of Oxnard.” Admission is free with registration. \nJeffrey Wayne Maulhardt was born in Oxnard and is a fifth-generation Ventura County descendant of the Maulhardt and Borchard families. Jeffrey’s deep connections to the area helped in his accumulation of images\, used to document the city’s history beyond his two previous titles in the Images of “America Series: Oxnard: 1867-1940” and “Oxnard: 1941-2004.” \nJeffrey Maulhardt taught American History for thirty years in the Oxnard Elementary School District\, and is now is working on his 16th local history book for Arcadia Publishing\, “Oxnard Now & Then.” He is the founder of the Oxnard Historic Farm Park and his books can be purchased at the Oxnard Historic Farm Park Foundation website. \nLocal History Happy Hour will return in June\, July\, and August. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

Alamillo is professor of Chicana/o Studies at California State University Channel Islands (Camarillo\, CA) and author of Making Lemonade out of Lemons: Mexican American Labor and Leisure in a California Town and co-author of Latinos in U.S. Sport. He is a consultant on Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History exhibition on Latinos and Latinas in baseball. \nDeportes: The Making of a Sporting Diaspora uncovers the hidden experiences of Mexican male and female athletes\, teams and leagues and their supporters who fought for a more level playing field on both sides of the border. Despite a widespread belief that Mexicans shunned physical exercise\, teamwork or “good sportsmanship\,” they proved that they could compete in a wide variety of sports at amateur\, semiprofessional\, Olympic and professional levels. Some even made their mark in the sports world by becoming the “first” Mexican athlete to reach the big leagues and win Olympic medals or world boxing and tennis titles. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Ventura County invites you to join us for our new bi-monthly Zoom series\, Local History Happy Hour. In this series\, local authors and historians will sit down with MVC Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history\, and take questions from the audience. \nMark your calendars for Tuesday\, April 20th from 5—6PM for our first installment featuring Roz McGrath\, author of Memoir of a Feminist. A retired educator and farm manager\, Roz teaches Women’s History and explores the question of why women are still so under-represented. Her book offers a concise overview of American Women’s History through the author’s own experiences as a young feminist. Admission is free with registration. \n“The idea for Local History Happy Hour is to bring people safely together in a more casual setting\, like friends meeting at a wine bar or cocktail lounge to converse\,” MVC Deputy Director Denise Sindelar says of the new online program. “During each program\, our guest author will share their favorite cocktail and how to prepare it — a fun bonus to our participating audience.” \nWhile this program is currently virtual\, the Museum has their sights set on in-person Local History Happy Hour in the near future. “Our hope is to transition to in-person programming sometime this summer\, while following the safety guidelines set forth by the CDC and Ventura County health officials\,” explains Digital Media & Marketing Manager Jonathon McGee. \nIn May\, Elena Brokaw will interview CSUCI professor Jose Alamillo about his latest book\, Deportes: The Making of a Sporting Mexican Diaspora\, and Oxnard author and historian Jeff Maulhardt. Registration information will be available in the coming weeks for both these programs\, as well a list of upcoming Local History Happy Hour events through August 2021.
