Buenaventura Art Association’s Collegiate Student Competition will open with a reception and awards ceremony on October 12, 2019 from 4—6 p.m. in the Smith Pavilion at the Museum of Ventura County. The Buenaventura Art Association’s Collegiate Student Competition is on display October 12—November 9, 2019.
Juror Bob Privitt is selecting from works by undergraduate artists at all Ventura County colleges and universities. He taught art at the college and university level for more than 40 years and retired from Pepperdine University as professor emeritus after 25 years there.
Primarily a sculptor and designer, Privitt also taught painting, printmaking, ceramics, art history and drawing. His works have been in more than 150 national and regional exhibitions, received numerous awards, and are in many public collections. He also has served as art exhibition juror for schools and arts organizations throughout the Southwest. “Because of my experience and qualifications, I’m open to a wide variety of styles, techniques and media,” Privitt said. “In judging any show, I am most interested in content and craftsmanship.”
In BAA’s 12th annual Student Competition, cash awards in the form of scholarships will go to three winners: $500 for first place, $300 for second, and $250 for third. Honorable mentions will go to five collegiate artists who will receive $250 gift cards for Dick Blick Art Materials. All winners also will get free, one-year BAA memberships and entry fees.
The Museum of Ventura County is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The student art exhibition in the Smith Pavilion will not include Tuesdays but will be open during the same hours, Wednesdays through Sundays. The student exhibition is included in museum admission. Cost is free to museum members and children 5 and younger, $1 for ages 7-17, $3 for seniors over 62 and students with ID, and $5 for ages 18-61. Visitors are advised to call the museum at 805-653-0323 before going, because the pavilion show will also be closed at times for special events.
